Client's requirements
This project, set within Dartmoor National Park, involved the construction of a replacement dwelling which was carried out in two phases spanning several years.
Our solution
Corylus Ecology undertook an initial assessment with a particular focus on bats and nesting birds. Evidence of, and potential for, roosting bats was recorded and led to a recommendation for further surveys.
The existing house was confirmed to support a bat roost and a bat mitigation class licence (also known as a bat low impact licence) was arranged from Natural England so that the work could be carried out lawfully. The demolition was subsequently done under close supervision from licensed ecologists, who were able to ensure the safety of any bats.
Mitigation and enhancements were arranged as part of the planning process in order to ensure the continued use of the site and wider area by bats. The property is surrounded by an extensive network of Devon hedges and pastoral fields, with many opportunities for bats and other wildlife.
Paul and Bea were a pleasure to work with throughout our build. They explained what was needed and communication was always excellent. Their work was thorough and very reasonably priced - they took care of all our paperwork so that the process of sign off was no effort or extra worry for us. It is obvious that both Paul and Bea are nature lovers and really care about their work - with a pragmatic approach to making sure that the wildlife is accommodated as much as possible without delays or extra expense from a construction point of view. We are delighted with their work and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.
