Client's requirements
Corylus Ecology was commissioned by The Land Trust to prepare a 5-year management plan for the Hogmoor Inclosure Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace (SANG). The SANG was created to reduce the potential for recreational pressure resulting from the growth of the Whitehill & Bordon New Town, on sites of international nature conservation value, including the Woolmer Forest Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
Hogmoor Inclosure SANG is a 54 hectare ex-military training ground comprising a variety of Habitats of Principal Importance (formerly referred to as Biodiversity Action Plan priority habitats) listed under Section 41 of the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006.
Most notably, the habitats present include lowland heathland, lowland acid grassland, lowland raised bog and ponds. The site also contains large areas of conifer plantation and secondary woodland. The habitats at Hogmoor Inclosure support a range of notable plant and invertebrate species. Additionally, the site’s heritage value includes a scheduled Second World War anti-aircraft gun emplacement and the possible location of a Bronze Age round barrow.
Our solution
Our Management Plan balances the primary need for a safe and accessible open greenspace for the local community, whilst ensuring this access is managed to enable the conservation and enhancement of the site’s ecological, heritage and landscape values.
This balance was achieved through a process of consultations, visitor access surveys, identifying opportunities for volunteer involvement, phasing management activities both spatially and seasonally, and providing a framework for monitoring and feedback to refine the Plan in light of experience.
